Terry Fox was born in 1958 in British Columbia. He lost his right leg to cancer at the age of nineteen. In April 1980 he set out on his Marathon of Hope, in which he intended to run across Canada in order to raise money for cancer research. He died in 1981 of lung cancer after completing 3,331 miles (5,373 km). He was an inspiration across the world, and today the Terry Fox Run is held annually in Canada and in sixty other countries. More than a million people take part, and it is the largest single fund-raising event for cancer research in the world.
